« Return to the Past ArticlesWhile we're very happy with the successes of our first three years - granting $372,000 to 27 different projects – we also see ways to make the process more successful. As a result, we want to let you know about three changes we'll be making next year.
1) Timing and application process. In past years, our grant process has had just one step: the application has been available in late April, and due in mid-June.
In 2010, we will have a two-part application process. The first application form (essentially asking for a 2 page letter of interest) will be available on January 18, 2010, and due February 19. These initial applications will be reviewed to make sure they meet 1%'s criteria, and those which do will be considered "finalists." In mid-March, the "finalists" will be asked to fill out a second, more detailed application. This will be due at the end of April.
2) Sustainability Grants Conference. Based on their written application, the "finalists" will be asked to make a five minute oral presentation of their proposal at 1% for the Tetons's first annual "Sustainability Grants Conference," tentatively scheduled for Saturday, May 8. These presentations will be video-taped, and posted on-line, along with the written application. At that point, both 1% for the Tetons members and the public at large will be able to donate to projects they like.
3) Timing and project funding. Projects which receive full funding during step 2) will be funded by 1% for the Tetons. Projects which do not will be referred to the 1% for the Tetons grants committee, which will consider those projects and allocate any remaining 1% for the Tetons funds. Organizations whose projects which are not funded will receive $500 to partially cover their costs of preparing their applications and presentations.
Funds will be awarded by early July.
While final details of all this are still being worked out, I wanted you to know about the basic changes in process and timing. Final details and applications will be posted on the 1% for the Tetons website (1PercentTetons.org) in the first part of January. As things progress, we'll keep you informed through the Community Foundation list serve and newspapers.
